Whether you can order a lab test on your own or need a doctor to do it for you comes down to three things: which state you live in, what the test actually checks for, and which company you're ordering through. Get those three variables right and the whole system stops feeling like a maze. Someone with insurance who hasn't hit their deductible yet often pays the plan's "negotiated rate," and that rate can land higher than a competitive self-pay price. Direct access can end up cheaper even for people who are, on paper, covered.
